| Overview: Patrick Lencioni, the
author of two other best-selling books “The Five Temptations
of a CEO” and “Four Obsessions of an Extraordinary Executive”
completes his trilogy with a third book, “The Five Dysfunctions
of a Team.” The book is presented in a unique fashion where
the majority of the text consists of a “fable” demonstrating
the evolution of a dysfunctional team to an effective, powerful
one. The story is set around the executives of a troubled, under-performing
Silicon Valley company who brings in a new, unorthodox CEO. Through
the CEO’s persistence and dedication, the executive group
is able to overcome obstacles and transform. “Five Dysfunctions
of a Team” gives a clear, engaging portrayal of the benefits
and hardships of building an effective team. |

| Key Points |
| Throughout “Five Dysfunctions of a Team”
Patrick Lencioni maintains that building a cohesive teams is not as
difficult as it may seem. He names the five obstacles to be overcome:
absence of trust, fear of conflict, lack of commitment, avoidance
of accountability, and inattention to results. Although the process
is not in and of itself difficult, Lencioni clearly notes that it
can be long and arduous. It will force all members to do things that
they are not yet comfortable with and may require even greater sacrifices
from others (The CEO in the fable was forced to let go two of the
executive staff members). It may even seem as if little or no progress
is actually being made. In the end, the leader must remain committed
to the overall goal. Only through the leader’s perseverance
and guidance can the group become a powerful team. |

Reviews |
| “ A gripping analysis of what makes teams
work effectively. This fine work is a must-read for any leader that
has come to grips with the fact that no one makes progress --much
less succeeds – alone”
James H Amos Jr., president and CEO, Mail Boxes Etc.
